Global climate change is expected to result in a greater frequency of extreme weather, which can cause lag effects on aboveground net primary production (ANPP). However, our understanding of lag effects is limited. To explore lag effects following extreme weather, we applied four treatments (control, doubled precipitation, 4 °C warming, and warming plus doubled precipitation) for 1 year in a randomized block design and monitored changes in ecosystem processes for 3 years in an old‐field tallgrass prairie in central Oklahoma. Biomass was estimated twice in the pretreatment year, and three times during the treatment and posttreatment years. Total plant biomass was increased by warming in spring of the treatment year and by doubled precipitation in summer. However, double precipitation suppressed fall production. During the following spring, biomass production was significantly suppressed in the formerly warmed plots 2 months after treatments ceased. Nine months after the end of treatments, fall production remained suppressed in double precipitation and warming plus double precipitation treatments. Also, the formerly warmed plots still had a significantly greater proportion of C4 plants, while the warmed plus double precipitation plots retained a high proportion of C3 plants. The lag effects of warming on biomass did not match the temporal patterns of soil nitrogen availability determined by plant root simulator probes, but coincided with warming‐induced decreases in available soil moisture in the deepest layers of soil which recovered to the pretreatment pattern approximately 10 months after the treatments ceased. Analyzing the data with an ecosystem model showed that the lagged temporal patterns of effects of warming and precipitation on biomass can be fully explained by warming‐induced differences in soil moisture. Thus, both the experimental results and modeling analysis indicate that water availability regulates lag effects of warming on biomass production.  相似文献

The effects of closed (i.e. locked) houses on the efficiency of control measures against Aedes aegypti (L.) were monitored weekly for 1 year (March 1981 to February 1982) using ovitraps in the towns of Felicity and Trincity, Trinidad. Regular anti-aegypti activities comprised source reduction, focal treatment with larvicidal 1% temephos sand granules and perifocal treatment with 40% wp fenthion. In Felicity, only 6% of houses were closed and after each treatment cycle ovitrap indices showed 100% control. In Trincity, 32% of houses were closed and after each treatment cycle reductions in ovitrap indices were less than 50%. Ae.aegypti eggs sampled in ovitraps totalled 493 (1-70 per positive paddle) in Felicity and 2310 (1-75 per positive paddle) in Trincity; twenty-three ovitraps were found to be positive in Felicity and 247 in Trincity. Ae.aegypti was successfully eliminated from Felicity during weeks 40-52 using focal/perifocal treatment monitored by ovitraps. Control failure in Trincity was attributed to the survival of untreated Ae.aegypti populations in closed houses. Recommendations to improve gaining access for inspection and treatment of closed houses include having control/surveillance workers commence activities at 06.00 hours on weekdays, to work at weekends or during school holidays, or as a last resort to invoke court orders against householders harbouring Ae.aegypti.  相似文献

Abstract The flowers of two species of threatened New Zealand mistletoes (Peraxilla tetrapetala and Peraxilla colensoi, Loranthaceae) have explosive buds that do not open unless force is applied by birds or two species of native short‐tongued bees. Opened flowers are visited by a variety of birds and insects. Although both species of Peraxilla conform to a pollination syndrome of ornithophily, bees may be effective alternative pollinators. We investigated the effectiveness of bees and birds as pollinators of P. colensoi at one site and P. tetrapetala at two sites in the South Island. Bees and other insects outnumbered birds as flower visitors at all three sites. By excluding birds with wire cages, we showed that two bee species regularly open flowers of P. tetrapetala, but only rarely open flowers of P. colensoi. Few pollen grains were deposited when either birds or bees opened buds, so opening buds was not by itself sufficient for adequate pollination. Instead, pollen continued to accumulate over the next 6 or 7 days, even inside cages that excluded birds. Both populations of P. tetrapetala were regularly pollen‐limited, but in different ways. At Ohau, opened flowers gained enough pollen to produce seeds, but many buds were not opened and hence failed to set seed. In contrast, at Craigieburn, nearly all buds were opened, but many of these did not receive enough pollen. These results demonstrate that native bees can partially replace birds as pollinators of mistletoes, despite their apparent ornithophilous syndrome. Ongoing reductions in New Zealand forest bird numbers means that the service bees provide may be important for the long‐term future of these plants.  相似文献

Abstract: Direct and indirect effects of industrial development have contributed, in part, to the threatened status of boreal ecotype caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in Alberta and Canada. Our goal was to develop a model that would allow managers to identify landscape-scale targets for industrial development, while ensuring functional habitat for sustainable caribou populations. We examined the relationship between functional habitat loss resulting from cumulative effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbance, and the rate of population change (Λ) for 6 populations of boreal caribou in Alberta, Canada. We defined functional habitat loss according to 2 variables for which we had a priori reasons to suspect causative associations with Λ: 1) percentage area of caribou range within 250 m of anthropogenic footprint, and 2) percentage of caribou range disturbed by wildfire within the last 50 years. Multiple regression coefficients for both independent variables indicated significant effects on Λ. The 2-predictor model explained 96% (R2) of observed variation in Λ among population units (F2,3 = 35.2, P = 0.008). The model may be used to evaluate plans for industrial development in relation to predicted wildfire rates and goals for caribou population growth rates.  相似文献

Abstract: Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi) are listed as an endangered subspecies in the United States and they exist in a single Florida population with <100 individuals; all known reproduction occurs south of Lake Okeechobee. Habitat loss is the biggest threat to this small population and previous studies of habitat selection have relied on very high frequency (VHF) telemetry data collected almost exclusively during diurnal periods. We investigated habitat selection of 12 panthers in the northern portion of the breeding range using 1) Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry data collected during nocturnal and diurnal periods and 2) VHF telemetry data collected only during diurnal periods. Analysis of both types of telemetry data yielded similar results as panthers selected upland (P < 0.001) and wetland (P < 0.001) forested habitat types. Our results indicated that forests are the habitats selected by panthers and generally support the current United States Fish and Wildlife Service panther habitat ranking system. We suggest that future studies with greater numbers of panthers should investigate panther habitat selection using GPS telemetry data collected throughout the range of the Florida panther and with location attempts scheduled more evenly across the diel period. Global Positioning System radiocollars were effective at obtaining previously unavailable nocturnal telemetry data on panthers; however, we recommend that panther researchers continue to collect VHF telemetry data until acquisition rates and durability of GPS collars improve. We document the isolation and characterization of 23 microsatellite DNA markers for the endangered Kirtland's warbler (Dendroica kirtlandii), a Nearctic/Neotropical migrant passerine. This suite of markers revealed moderate to high levels of allelic diversity (averaging 7.7 alleles per locus) and heterozygosity (averaging 72%). Genotypic frequencies at 22 of 23 (95%) markers conformed to Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium expectations, and no linkage disequilibrium was observed in blood samples taken from 14 warblers found on the wintering grounds in the Bahamas archipelago. Multilocus genotypes resulting from this suite of markers should reduce the amount of resources required for initiating new genetic studies assessing breeding structure, parentage, demographics, and individual‐level ecological interactions for D. kirtlandii.  相似文献

Abstract: Wolverines (Gulo gulo) are a rare carnivore and live-capture efforts often comprise a significant component of field research projects. Wolverine studies have used aerial, snowmobile, hand-capture, and live-trap capture techniques. We reviewed existing wolverine live-capture data to evaluate sex-related biases associated with capture technique. We modified round log live traps, developed a new portable wooden live trap, and evaluated effects of live trap type, trap-site selection, and seasonal timing of trapping on wolverine capture success. Aerial capture techniques had a positive bias for capture of male wolverines. Live-capture rates were highest for portable wooden traps and lowest for barrel traps. Trapping success was highest during March when snow conditions were amenable to wolverine travel and temperatures improved bait effectiveness. Traps in corridor habitats were more successful than traps in noncorridor habitats. This difference was more pronounced in environments with rugged topography. We provide guidance for live-trap operation, describe animal handling procedures, and provide detailed instructions for construction of modified round log and portable wooden wolverine live traps. These will benefit future wolverine studies by increasing trap effectiveness and reducing risk of injury and mortality to captured wolverines.  相似文献

The slipper spurge (Pedilanthus tithymaloides) is a small cactus-likeherbaceous plant. The shoot apex has a single tunica layer andsometimes the second layer also simulates it. There is a centralmeristem zone whose significance could not be determined. Thefirst bud meristem differentiates at the second node. The earliestbud meristem has a procambium but no shell zone was observed. The node is trilacunar. There are three bud traces and threeprophyll traces. The single prophyll is situated at right anglesto the subtending leaf.  相似文献
